Each of us has our own unique voice which has immense potential to communicate, inspire, create, empower and to soothe. We might imagine the voice as a magical painter’s palette where a vast range of colours, textures and subtle variations can be created, or as a dance that ‘sculpts the air’ by shaping sound into endless varieties of tonal images and forms.
Using our voices can provide deep experiences of expression, creativity, beauty, freedom and relief. A famous saying from Roy Hart (of the Roy Hart Theatre) is that the voice is the “Muscle of the Soul”. There is also significant scientific research into the voice, demonstrating how breath work, vocalization and music can offer many positive wellness benefits. Positive feelings of accomplishment, self-esteem and awareness are fostered through the supportive dynamics that can be engaged in voice lessons and singing. The physiological processes inherent in voice production can beneficially work to elevate mood and help regulate stress and anxiety, ie. Stress Relief and the Voice and Neurobiology and Human Musicality .
I offer a holistic approach to voice lessons, helping the learner attain appropriate technical/physiological skills for safe, healthy and wide ranging vocal expression while also exploring and integrating the creative, artistic, musical and emotional aspects of their unique voice and singing. Throughout your voice lessons we’ll work on:
- Breath work; learning about the general anatomy and physiology of breathing and how to develop and implement a balanced full-body muscular coordination of appropriate inhalation, supported exhalation with the balanced range of thoracic and vocal tensions required to produce, or ‘shape and colour’, vocal sound and singing.
- Vocalization; learning about the general anatomy and physiology of the voice and how vocal sound is produced in relation to supported breathing and the varying muscular co-ordinations of the larynx, resonators, articulators and the vowels of speech.
- Exploring and developing a wide range of tonal resonance and the potential colours, textures and intensities of the voice in relation to a playful imagination, creative, artistic and emotional expression in connection to the vocal techniques being discovered and developed.
- Facilitating attitudes of ability and possibility, curiosity and creative play; understanding and creatively working with performance anxiety or other emerging emotions, overcoming self-limiting negative thoughts and feelings in relation to the voice, singing and self expression; reinforcing self-awareness, positive self-regard, feelings of accomplishment and the joy of singing!
